AUGUSTO CALÇADA
BIOGRAPHY
Augusto Calçada is a Brazilian multimedia artist whose research focuses on hybrid and speculative projects in art, science, and technology. Using various media and platforms, his work moves between video, sound, performance, installation, digital technology, and bioart, exploring the intersection of different forms of expression. His projects address themes such as identity, society, social critique, memory, and the human connection with physical and digital spaces. With a strong emphasis on open-source collaboration, Augusto investigates the role of digital tools in art, particularly in creating experiences within phygital (physical + digital) environments.
His practice also extends to immersive installations where he integrates technology, space, and interaction to provoke critical reflections and reimagine established perspectives. His projects break with conventional logic, question social mechanisms, and explore innovative interfaces. They have been exhibited in over 25 countries, including the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, CultureHUB in New York, the Athens Digital Arts Festival (ADAF), Transmediale 2024 in Germany, the International Video Art Forum in Saudi Arabia, /fu:bar/ in Croatia, Saint-André des Arts in Paris, the Museum of Image and Sound in São Paulo, and The Wrong Biennale.
Augusto Calçada is co-curator of the ecoSYNTH Festival in Berlin and co-founder of Terrabytes Glitch Lab, a collective of independent artists and researchers dedicated to exploring the intersections of art, science, technology, and nature. Embracing the open-source spirit, the collective supports accessible and shareable innovation, amplifying a collaborative digital network and fostering connectivity within the creative community.

2024 Kaaysá Art Residency – 4 weeks in the city of Boiçucanga, on the northern coast of São Paulo, between the Atlantic Forest and the sea.
